Who I Am

I’m Hyrum LaTurner, a felony criminal defense attorney based in LaPorte County, Indiana, where I handle the majority of my caseload in LaPorte Superior Court 1 and LaPorte Circuit Court. I’m also available to take cases across Northwest Indiana and Illinois where the situation calls for it. My background as a public defender handling serious felony cases — combined with academic training as a philosophy professor — shapes a disciplined, methodical approach to every case I take.

I believe the best outcomes come from thorough preparation, not shortcuts. That means closely investigating the evidence, understanding the law, and knowing every realistic option before deciding on a direction. Most cases are resolved before trial — but that decision should come from strength and full information, not from being unprepared to go further if needed.

If you or someone you love is facing felony charges in LaPorte County, you deserve a lawyer who will take the time to understand what makes your case unique — and who is fully prepared for trial if that turns out to be the right path.

Why I Take a Limited Number of Clients

My public defender caseload is demanding, and I take that responsibility seriously. Because of that demand, I intentionally limit the number of private clients I accept at any given time. This isn’t a marketing device — it’s a commitment to giving every case, appointed or retained, the attention it deserves.

I’m committed to providing excellent representation to those who are most vulnerable and least able to afford it — that commitment shapes how I practice, whether the case is appointed or retained.

If I can’t take your case, I’ll tell you directly rather than stringing you along.

No Two Cases Are the Same

Most criminal cases are resolved through negotiation, and when a plea agreement genuinely serves your interests, that’s the direction we’ll take. Other cases call for something different. There’s no single best approach — the right strategy depends on the specific facts, the evidence, and what you’re trying to achieve. What stays constant is the preparation behind it: understanding the case thoroughly enough to recognize the right path, and being ready to see it through, including at trial, if that’s what the case requires.
